Resources / Insurance terms
Insurance Glossary
A plain-language starting point for terms found in medical and general insurance documents.
01
Deductible and excess
The amount a policyholder may need to pay toward a covered loss or treatment before the insurer's share is calculated. Check your policy for how and when it applies.
02
Co-payment and coinsurance
These describe a share of eligible medical costs paid by the insured person. One may be a set amount and the other a percentage; the policy schedule explains the actual arrangement.
03
Network provider
A healthcare provider participating in an insurer's network. Whether a provider is currently in-network should be checked directly with the insurer or Brysons.
04
Pre-certification
Approval requested before certain medical services are provided. The policy sets out when this is needed and whether approval guarantees payment.
05
Policy term and insured value
The policy term is the period of cover. The insured value is an amount stated for property or another insured interest. Read the schedule alongside the full policy wording.
